Desktop clients allow us to integrate deeper into the operating system for a better user experience. We focus on improving Tutanota desktop clients too because Tutanota doesn’t support IMAP, and that’s for good reason.
Supporting IMAP is not an option for Tutanota, as it would undermine our built-in encryption. As an encrypted email service that promises to always keep your data safe, we simply cannot implement a feature that destroys this promise
Technically, IMAP support is Risk Managers Email List only possible if the emails are downloaded to your computer without encryption. However, at Tutanota we promise that your data is always end-to-end encrypted, also on your own devices! So instead of supporting an insecure feature, we focused on improving our open source desktop clients.
Desktop Clients Getting Better Fast
In the last year alone, we have
- Performed a security audit of all desktop clients
- We have added a spell checker for several languages
- Integrated clients more deeply into each operating system
- Added MAPI support for Windows
- We have moved desktop clients out of beta
- Added U2F support
And what makes us even more excited: We’re working on offline mode so that soon you can access your encrypted Tutanota mailbox even when you don’t have internet access.
OS Integration for Windows
A great example of the superiority of desktop clients over webmail access is the deep integration we’ve achieved in Windows. The perfect integration with the operating system makes the use of Tutanota even easier and more comfortable.
For example, you can directly attach files to a new email, even when Tutanota is not currently running, via the context menu of a file -> Send To… -> Email Recipient.
In various programs you can use the “Send Document as Mail” function and attach the currently open file to a new email. Some examples are
- LibreOffice in File -> Send -> As Email
- Adobe Acrobat Reader
Another great advantage is that business software often uses this feature to send invoices and similar files directly from the application to the email client. For example, you can now use the Tutanota desktop client to directly email invoices from the SAGE50 business tool .
In short, our desktop clients for Windows, Linux and Mac OS make it easy to use Tutanota.
- more comfortable,
- and easier to use.
The key with Tutanota is that all data is always encrypted, even when stored locally on the desktop client. The smart search feature creates an encrypted search index that is searched locally on the client. This ensures that our servers do not see any of your data or any of your search queries. Tutanota is the only email service with this combination of usability and security.
